At Exeter Hospital, our rehabilitation team — physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, athletic trainers and therapy assistants — provides evidence-based, individualized care. We partner with you on goals that matter most, from easing pain and improving mobility to returning to work, school or sports.
Inpatient Rehabilitation
At Exeter Hospital, our inpatient rehabilitation team helps patients recover safely and regain independence during their hospital stay. Licensed professionals provide care either in your hospital room or in the rehabilitation department.
Based on your needs, your provider may recommend physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech-language and swallow therapy. A key goal of our team is to prepare a safe and effective rehabilitation plan for you to continue after discharge.
Our occupational therapists help you regain independence with everyday activities and provide strategies to adapt to new challenges. Care is offered across:
- Critical Care Units
- Medical/Surgical
- Neurology
- Oncology
- Orthopedics
- Cardio/Pulmonary
- Emergency Department
Occupational Therapy interventions include:
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Bathing, dressing, grooming and transfers
- Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs): Cooking, shopping, money management and driving
- Cognitive Assessment & Training: Strategies for memory, attention and problem-solving
- Home Safety Recommendations: Guidance for a safe return home
- Upper Extremity Management: Strength, coordination, and functional use of arms and hands
Occupational therapists can also recommend adaptive equipment to help you stay safe and independent.
Physical therapists focus on improving safe movement and mobility during your hospital stay. Services are available in:
- Critical Care Units
- Medical/Surgical
- Neurology
- Oncology
- Orthopedics
- Cardio/Pulmonary
- Emergency Department
Physical Therapy interventions include:
- Balance and fall prevention
- Endurance training and conditioning
- Flexibility and strengthening exercises
- Functional skills (e.g., getting in/out of bed, walking, climbing stairs, lifting, bending, etc.)
- Gait assessment and training
- Home safety assessments
- Manual and compressive therapies
- Neuromotor development training
Physical therapists may also provide equipment to improve safety and independence.
Speech-language pathologists provide specialized care for patients who have difficulty swallowing, speaking or communicating. They also address cognitive challenges following stroke, traumatic brain injury or other conditions.
Conditions treated and services include:
- Dysphagia (swallowing disorders)
- Aphasia and other language disorders
- Cognitive-linguistic disorders
- Speech disorders (dysarthria, apraxia)
- Swallow studies (diagnostic x-ray)
Inpatient Rehabilitation Services are available daily, including weekends and holidays, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Services on weekends and holidays are limited to prioritized consults and those patients being discharged home on a Saturday or Sunday.
