More About Physical Therapy

Our Approach

Exeter Hospital’s physical therapists offer individualized rehabilitation programs that may include:

  • Functional activities and mobility training
  • Strengthening and conditioning exercises
  • Home exercise programs
  • Aquatic therapy in our state-of-the-art pools

Specialty Services
Post-Operative Orthopedic Therapy

At Exeter Hospital, our Physical and Occupational Therapists work closely with surgeons, physiatrists and neurosurgeons to ensure a smooth recovery following surgery. Post-operative orthopedic therapy is designed to reduce pain and inflammation, protect the surgical area and restore function as patients progress back to daily activities.

Each rehabilitation plan is tailored to the individual and may include strengthening, conditioning, functional training and home exercises to help patients regain mobility and confidence after surgery.

Aquatic Rehabilitation

Our aquatic therapy program takes place in a full-length lap pool and a warm water pool, both designed to support recovery. A chair lift is available for safe entry and exit. Benefits of aquatic rehabilitation include:

  • Improved strength and endurance
  • Increased range of motion
  • Pain management after injury or surgery
  • Enhanced balance, agility, and coordination
  • Core stabilization and flexibility

Aquatic physical therapy typically includes 8 to 12 visits before progressing to land-based therapy. Warm water buoyancy decreases joint stress, improves comfort and helps patients move more easily.

Requirements: A physician’s prescription and a land-based evaluation by a physical therapist are needed to begin aquatic therapy.

Insurance Coverage: Most health insurance plans cover pool-based therapy. Please check with our team or your insurer for details.

Post-Rehabilitation Aquatic Exercise

After completing therapy, many patients choose to continue exercise in our aquatic environment to maintain their progress. Group sessions are supervised by Rehabilitation Services staff. Call 603-580-6548 for enrollment and pricing information.

Spine Care

Back and neck pain affect a large portion of the population, sometimes leading to long-term disability. Fortunately, most cases respond well to early intervention with physical therapy.

Our therapists treat conditions such as:

  • Generalized low back pain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Osteoarthritis of the spine
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoporosis

Early, targeted therapy can not only relieve current symptoms but also help prevent future episodes.

Specialty Techniques
Bowenwork

Bowenwork is a gentle, hands-on technique that uses rolling pressure on precise points to stimulate healing throughout the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. It can benefit conditions such as arthritis, migraines, TMJ, concussions, musculoskeletal disorders and respiratory issues.

Bowenwork is available at the following locations. Please call your preferred location to learn more and/or to book an appointment.

Graston Technique

Using specialized stainless-steel instruments, Graston therapy helps detect and break down scar tissue and adhesions in muscles and tendons, restoring mobility and reducing pain.

Myofascial Release

This hands-on therapy involves gentle, sustained pressure to release restrictions in the fascia (connective tissue), improving mobility and reducing pain.

Sports-Specific Training

Exeter Hospital offers orthopedic and sports-focused outpatient rehabilitation at eight locations, treating musculoskeletal injuries, post-surgical recovery, spine conditions and sports injuries.

Our programs help patients of all activity levels heal safely, return to daily life and prevent re-injury. The Athletic Performance Center provides post-rehabilitation programs to restore strength, enhance performance and support a safe return to activity.

Biomechanical Assessment

At Exeter Hospital, our licensed Physical and Occupational Therapists use biomechanical assessment to help patients restore mobility, reduce pain and recover from or even avoid surgery. With advanced training in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology, our team evaluates the body as a whole to identify the root cause of injury, promote healing and prevent re-injury.

Through our Athletic Performance Center, strength and conditioning specialists, athletic trainers, and corrective exercise experts provide continued support after rehabilitation, helping patients return to activity safely and enhance overall performance.
