Breast Ultrasound
Breast Ultrasound for Diagnostic Evaluation
At Exeter Hospital, a breast ultrasound is a painless imaging exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the breast. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not use radiation.
Breast ultrasound is often used to look more closely at an abnormality found on a mammogram or to help determine whether a lump is solid or filled with fluid. It is a valuable tool in diagnosing breast lumps, though the American College of Radiology does not recommend ultrasound as a stand-alone screening test for breast cancer.
A doctor's order is required for this test. At Exeter Hospital's Center for Breast Health, a radiologist interprets your breast ultrasound in real time and explains the results before you leave.
